In the latest study on the safety and effectiveness of Viagra (sildenafil) to treat erectile dysfunction in men, the drug has been found to be more effective than placebo, researchers reported.
The study, which was presented at the American Society of Transplant Surgeons’ Annual Scientific Meeting in Atlanta, involved nearly 100,000 patients with erectile dysfunction who were either receiving medication to help achieve an erection or not.
Sildenafil is an FDA-approved drug that contains the active ingredient tadalafil.
Researchers analyzed data from more than 2,300 patients who were not receiving medication to help achieve an erection to determine which group could benefit most from Viagra.
“We know there are many different medications that are available, and they all have similar side effects and effects. This is one of the reasons that the FDA has allowed us to use these drugs and allow doctors to prescribe them,” said Dr. Edward G. Kockel, professor of pharmacology and drug administration at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. “We are pleased to have found Viagra to be as effective as the original Viagra in treating erectile dysfunction.”
Viagra is FDA-approved as a drug to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension, and it works by relaxing the blood vessels in the lungs, causing blood pressure to lower.
“It’s not a drug you would take for pulmonary hypertension,” said Dr. David F. Hulsey, an endocrinologist at the University of Miami-Journal City Hospital and professor of medicine and medical sciences. “It’s a drug you would take for heart failure. You don’t need to take a drug for heart failure.”
The study involved about 2,200 patients, including about 100 with erectile dysfunction, who were given sildenafil. The researchers compared Viagra with placebo, another medication used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension, and the drug was significantly more effective than placebo.
The study also found that the drug was slightly less effective than placebo.
“This is a drug you would take for heart failure,” said Dr.
The study, which was published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, found that Viagra was effective in treating erectile dysfunction, even when it was not as effective as placebo, researchers noted. It is also used to help people with sexual dysfunction.
Viagra is not FDA-approved for any use in women. Women should not take Viagra if they have a history of heart disease, stroke, or liver or kidney disease.

“Viagra is an FDA-approved drug that has been used to treat erectile dysfunction and pulmonary arterial hypertension in men,” said Dr. Edward Kockel.
Viagra is a drug used to treat erectile dysfunction in men. The drug works by relaxing the blood vessels in the penis, allowing the penis to become erect. When the blood vessels in the penis become inflamed, a painful erection is triggered. If it is not treated, blood from the penis can build up in the body and cause erection problems. When erections occur, they are called priapism.
Viagrais a prescription drug used to treat male sexual function problems (impotence or erectile dysfunction-ED). It is also used to treat the symptoms of an enlarged prostate.
How does Viagra work?
Viagra works by relaxing the blood vessels in the penis, allowing blood to flow into the penis when the person is sexually excited. This will help men with ED get and maintain an erection.
How to take Viagra
Viagra should be taken orally with a full glass of water, usually 1 to 2 hours before sexual activity. The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. Do not take more often than once daily.
Side effects
Some side effects may be more serious. If you experience any of the following serious side effects, stop taking Viagra and contact a doctor immediately:
Allergic reactions
If you experience any of the following signs of an allergic reaction:
If you get a rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing, especially when first beginning to take the drug, chest pain or fainting, severe skin rash, unusual sweating, stiff neck or muscle. This may occur 3 or more days after beginning treatment.
Blood pressure changes
If you experience any of the following symptoms that may be harmless or may be a sign of a serious blood pressure problem:
If you have severe chest pain, lightheadedness, feeling of falling apart, fast/irregular heartbeat, rapid/irregular heartbeat, chest/jaw/left arm pain, weakness on one side of the body, trouble/restless feeling, feeling very weak, or a burning skin rash with blistering and peeling.
If you have any unusual tiredness, mood changes, weight loss, irregular heartbeat, chest pain/angina (chest pain, irregular heartbeat, shortness of breath, dizziness, fainting), or if you think you are having an (one of several other similar problems described in this medication), stop taking Viagra and contact a doctor immediately.
Kidney problems
If you have kidney problems, or are unable to urinate due to the fact that you are not urinating, you may be able to use Viagra to improve your kidneys symptoms. In particular, if you have the following symptoms:
If you are already taking other medications that may affect your kidneys, you may be able to use Viagra to improve your kidneys symptoms.
If you are also taking medicines that affect the kidneys: medicines that affect the kidneys (e.g., medicines that decrease the amount of urine produced), medicines that affect the kidneys (e.g., medicines that decrease the amount of urine produced), medicines that affect the kidneys (including medicines that decrease the amount of urine produced), or medicines that affect the kidneys (including medicines that decrease the amount of urine produced.
You can help to determine whether your kidneys problems may be due to Viagra or other similar medicines. Tell your doctor about all the medicines you take, and ask him or her if you take medicines that affect your kidneys.
Stomach upset
If you experience any of the following symptoms in your stomach:
If you have a belly ache, pain when passing/stopping food/liquid, feeling of being sick (especially of large amounts of food) or being tired (especially of foods that are heavy or contain large amounts of fat), you may be able to use Viagra to improve your stomach problems symptoms.
Bloating
Bloating may be caused by stress, illness, exercise, smoking, drinking alcohol, or the fact that you are taking medicines that can affect the kidneys.
If you have a severe headache, feeling of being sick, chest/jaw/left arm pain, feeling of falling apart, fast/irregular heartbeat, rapid/irregular heartbeat, rapid/regular/severe headache, weakness on one side of the body, blurred vision, sweating, feeling cold/irregular/severe sweating.
Dizziness
Dizziness is often the first sign of a serious loss of consciousness.
1.Nitrates (e.g., nitroglycerin, isosorbide dinitrate): Cialis and nitrates both lower blood pressure. Taking them together can cause a significant and potentially life-threatening drop in blood pressure (hypotension), leading to dizziness, fainting, or even heart attack or stroke. It is contraindicated to use Cialis with nitrates or recreational "poppers" (amyl nitrites).
2.Alpha-blockers (e.g., prazosin, terazosin, tamsulosin): Both Cialis and alpha-blockers relax blood vessels, which can lead to excessive blood pressure reduction when used together. This may result in dizziness, fainting, or orthostatic hypotension (a sudden drop in blood pressure when standing). If needed, your doctor may adjust the dosage or recommend spacing the medications.
3.Other antihypertensive drugs (e.g., atenolol, propranolol, enalapril, lisinopril): Cialis can enhance the blood-pressure-lowering effects of these medications. While this interaction is usually less severe than with nitrates or alpha-blockers, it can still cause dizziness or fainting in sensitive individuals. Close monitoring of blood pressure is recommended.
Cialis (tadalafil) can interact with certain foods and beverages, potentially altering its effectiveness or increasing the risk of side effects. Here are the key drug-food interactions to be aware of:
